About the Studio

Private Lessons

Ren provides customized lessons designed to teach piano fundamentals (note reading, theory, technique, ear training) while still having fun and playing the music and genre of your choice.

Private lessons are either 30-minutes, 45- minutes, or 1-hour, and they are given on a weekly basis. 30-minute lessons are offered only for the young beginner (4-5 years old) or students in their first year of study.  Students in their 2nd year must begin 45-minute lessons, and advanced students are required to take 1-hour lessons.

Lessons start at $160/month.  Please inquire for details.

Performances

Sharing music is a significant aspect of music making. Students are encouraged to participate in performances and programs throughout the year. These include bi-annual recitals, Certificate of Merit as well as the Bach, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary Festivals.

  • Advanced(Level 9-10) – 1.5+ hrs

About the Teacher

Hi! My name is Ren Thompson, and I am a pianist, singer-songwriter and teacher.  I currently live in Carlsbad, CA and teach students of all ages and levels.

I started to learn piano at the age of 6 years old, playing in music auditions, recitals and festivals through out my younger years.  I was accepted into the University of San Diego as a Choral Scholar where I received my degree in Music and Business, then went on to advance my knowledge in Music through a Musical Theater Writing Program in Hollywood.  I am currently continuing my education at the Berklee School of Music through their advanced music certification programs.

I’ve been blessed to have various experiences in the performing arts – from accompanying choirs and other musicians, performing in musicals, theater, short film, writing a musical, playing the clarinet while marching in the Rose Parade, singing & dancing, writing & recording my own music in a professional studio – I believe all of these experiences have made me the teacher I am today.

Music is a universal language, and I believe everyone can benefit from piano and music lessons. Teaching countless students in public schools and privately, my 16 years of teaching experience has made me a better musician, performer and teacher.  The purpose of my studio is to help students discover their musical potential through piano study and music performance.  My desire is to work with people who are interested in being the best they can be, regardless of age or natural ability.  Recently moving to the Carlsbad area, I hope to continue to inspire young musicians to pursue music and life with passion and spirit.

Former PUSD Musical/Choir director for two elementary schools.  In these programs, I wrote, directed and accompanied my students in many wonderful performances.  After 5 fun years, I retired from my positions to focus on my private studio full time.

Music Degree from the University of San Diego

Graduated from the University of San Diego with my degree in Music and Business, and continuing my education at the Berklee School of Music in advanced Music studies.

Recording Artist

Over the last few years, I have composed several songs and recorded at professional studios.  If it is a students desire to one day write, record and/or perform their own music, I can help assist to make that happen.  Music is a great passion of mine and I love enables others to reach their musical aspirations.

Reviews

Jamie M. – Grade 11

My teacher for 10 years, helped me excel my playing and reach high levels piano performance

Ms. Ren has taught me piano for about 10 years. When I first started out, I was super shy and had difficulty learning how to play piano. However, Ms. Ren was super supportive and kind, which helped me excel throughout my years of playing. Also, she has helped push me to do better than I already can. Because of her, I have been able to achieve Level 8 for Certificate of Merit and play in my high school’s jazz band on piano. I don’t think I would have been able to be the person I am today without meeting Ms. Ren.

Maya H. – Grade 12

I started not knowing anything about music, encouraging and pushes me to do my best

Mrs. Thompson has been my piano teacher for the past 11 years(started at age 7) and I’ve learned so much from her! I started off not knowing anything about music, and she taught me how to read and play music.  She is encouraging yet easygoing and always pushes me to do my best!  Mrs. Thompson is open to all types of piano music, from classical to pop, and lets you decide what kind of songs you want to play!
